Step Procedure Dates & Deadlines

Eligibility

Find out if you are eligible to participate in an exchange to McMaster University. Visit your institution’s Study Abroad / Exchange office to inquire about the details of your school’s agreement with McMaster and all of the requirements.

Online Application

Fill out the online application by the deadline. (This deadline applies to both the September and January academic terms.) The online application link (with an appropriate user name and password) will be provided to you by your exchange coordinator once you have been nominated by your institution.

Course Selection

When completing the online application, you must look at the course listings offered at McMaster. Pay attention to the pre-requisites for each course. Make sure to NOT take a course in the same semester with its pre-requisite. Do NOT select 600 level courses. You must only register for 700 level courses. Once you have selected your courses, you must check to see if they are available during your term of study. Once you have finalized the courses you wish to take, add them to your online application for faculty approval.

If there are any changes to made to your course selection, you will be contacted.

  • Preliminary course selection is due by March 31.
  • All your courses MUST be approved by the end of the 1st week of June.

Supporting Documents

Mail in your supporting documents. (Note: We do not accept faxed or emailed documents.)Supporting documents:

  • Most recent original transcript (with an English translation and grading system attached)
  • Nomination letter (If you are not currently studying at an English-speaking institution, your nomination letter should include a statement stating that you have fulfilled your institution’s English-language requirements)

English Language Proficiency Requirements

  • Required if: You have not resided in an English-speaking country for at least four years, or if English was not the primary language of your post-secondary education.
  • Why it is important: It is important that you can communicate well in English so that you can work effectively with your fellow students, the faculty and staff.
  • What we look for: We accept TOEFL and IELTS scores.
    • TOEFL requirement: 100 (internet based), 250 (computerized test), 600 (written test)
    • IELTS requirement: Overall score of 7.0
    • Visit www.toefl.org or www.ielts.org for more information on these tests.
  • How to submit: Make arrangements with TOEFL or IELTS to have your results sent to us directly.
  • Supporting documents must arrive at McMaster before the end of the 2nd week of April.

Faculty Approval

Once all supplementary documents have arrived at our office, faculty advisors at McMaster will begin to review your application and course selection.
  • Your approval status will be available on your online application by the end of the 2nd week of May, along with your student number, and student barcode.

Acceptance Package

 

You will receive your acceptance via e-mail from McMaster University. This will contain your official admission letter, an immigration letter, and other information that you will need prior to arriving at McMaster. Information such as course registration, health insurance, housing options, payment of fees, and travel. Hard copies of your official admission letter and immigration letter will be mailed to your home university. You will receive information about completing a New Student Form.
  • Acceptance e-mails will be sent out by the end of the 2nd week of May.
  • Hard copies of official letters will be sent out in June.
  • New Student Forms should arrive at McMaster before July.
